The Animals
The animals in our care at present range from gerbils to Clydesdales horses and anything in between .
'Justin one of our donkeys is companion to Tammy our old chestnut mare who was born in 1970 .The other two donkeys are Patches and her daughter Pumpkin who was born at the centre 6 days after her mum came to us ! . We only have one Clydesdale horse now - Sonny - as Eilidh - his mum , died at the beginning of May ; Meredin a beautiful Highland mare; Tonto a piebald gelding; Gwerthfawr our beautiful Eriskay youngster ; Wee Dinky Doo -a tricoloured miniature Shetland yearling ; Echo a black Shetland pony and her son Wispa and lastly Ebony another black Shetland and her son Jet . Other animals in our care consist of Vietnamese Pigs, a Pygmy goat, one Highland cow and two Jersey bullocks , cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters,degus, chinchillas , a terrapin ,cockatiels, budgies and an amazon parrot. We have also just received 6 adorable day old chicks [ march 20th 2008 ] Three of the hens are now producing eggs .We lost the fourth due to a sad accident when Chickaroo got trapped and died. The two cockerals are doing well and are very attractive.
A few of the wee furries are rehomed but most of the animals will remain with us for life
The People
My name is Mione Morrison . I am founder and Centre Manager of Glendrick Roost . I have always loved animals and have had large collections from being a child . My mum encouraged me in this and allowed any animals as long as I was prepared to look after them . No going to bed without them being fed !
I have an honours degree in environmental sciences with biology and have been able to put a large amount of my newfound knowledge to good use in the care of the animals at the centre . When our new premises are found I shall also be able to put environmental policies into practise and help preserve and enhance the environment around the centre .One of my hobbies is birdwatching and I will provide new habitats to encourage wildlife to use the facilities available . I am also very interested in teaching youngsters to care for all animals and strongly believe that by doing this they will not only care for animals but will become more caring adults .By giving disabled people a chance to handle and be near animals their lives will be enriched and often in the case of a mental health issue a communication channel can be opened. |
Our organisation came into being because many animals came to me when no longer wanted or when they were suffering abuse. It was decided to form a “proper rescue centre to be able to help more animals than I could cope with on my own.
