Moos Noos
Tuesday 19th August PDF  | Print |

Some of the wee furries that were living in boss’s porch have been moved down the road to a shed along with some rabbits and guinea pigs because Boss is moving house on Monday of next week and they have gone to live there. Fortunately it was a fine day as it was less stressful to leave the animals in their cages and put the cages in the trailer as the drive was so short a distance . Pedro [ a grey chinchilla ] thought this was a wonderful way of travel sitting up at the top of his cage watching the world go by.

It is going to be VERY interesting to see how all NINE cats [four indoor and five outsiders ] are going to get on living at the one address along with the four dogs ! ! ! ! [ where do I GO ?? ] Oh where is our new centre ?

Boss had to move the poor chickens again today . They were moved yesterday but the rain overnight had caused a big puddle to form in the run and they were walking about in mud .

Poor Chickaroo died a couple or weeks ago . She was such a fiesty wee hen .We all loved her and miss her cheeky ways .

The hens have started to lay and we’ve had one egg most days over the past week but there were two today . They are all brown ones some are dark and some are paler but we have had no white ones yet . Chickadee is white so we thought she would produce white eggs and being the biggest we thought she would have produced some by now. But no .

Helen and Boss were away to Dobbies in Perth today with Perth Highland Games tomorrow but part of it was cancelled due to the appalling weather so they went to Dobbies on both days . They raised lots of money to buy me my grub for the winter [ thank goodness ] I don’t fancy living rough .I like my haylage and hay to keep me amused and my tum full !

Puisicain the cat went along with all five dogs and they stayed on a caravan site overnight . Everyone got on really well and Puisicain slept most of the day on a chair waking only to be stroked by the many people who couldn’t believe she was so relaxed . She is an old hand after all . !

Wish I could go I am quite small for a Highlander - I am sure they could fit me in

Over the last couple of months there have been quite a large number of wildlife rescues including lots of young birds , rabbits , an owl and a fox cub . These all went to Hessilhead to be cared for and hopefully released back into the wild.

There have been no further animals brought into the care of the Roost as due to lack of a ‘ centre ‘ Boss feels more animals in an already stretched situation is bad news. New animals have been sent to other rescue centres until we find other accommodation .

Volunteers have, as always ,been very supportive and helped boss over this hard time . She sez ‘’Thank you to you all . ‘’

A few fundraisers weren’t attended as intended and so more venues need to be found to raise the necessary funds to cover the large bills incurred over the coming winter season .

A jumble sale is being organised to help and will take place on Saturday 27th September in the Menzies Hall Fintry . Please come and enjoy a rummage - bric a brac ; books ; toys will be available .

Boss has had a bad time over the past couple of months as she cared for her mum and nursed her through her final illness . Her mum died at the beginning of July. For this reason the website has been on hold regarding updates.

We have all still been cared for of course but nothing else has been done .

Hopefully she is now able to update the Moos Noos I keep giving her . She also has all the animal updates and people updates to fill in . Please bear with us till she catches up !

Tito the female chinchilla that gave birth in April has not been keeping too well and is ‘’ milking off her back ‘’ - feeding her babies whilst loosing weight herself . For this reason the boys have been weaned early leaving only the wee girl baby to continue feeding This will hopefully allow Arica  to put on much needed weight . The boys - Roca  and Rio - went to Dobbies on their first fundraiser alone and were a big hit . They are not suitable as pets for children as they don’t like being handled much preferring to explore when let out of their cages . As their coats are so dense - ? - handling just causes the hair to stick and get sweaty which they do not like . They are quite happy to be stroked gently .

They can’t get wet because of the denseness of the coat and clean themselves in volcanic dust in their native Peru . Here we give them a sand bath - a sight to see as they all get in and roll in unison !

A white cockatiel and a white budgie have been handed in because the owner died . The budgie we are going to call Dobby [ as she was handed in whilst we were at Dobbies doing a fundraiser and Boss likes Dobby in Harry Potter ] and the cockatiel is going to be called Hedwig . [Hedwig is the white owl in Harry Potter ]

They are in the same cage at present and if they get on ok they will be left together . Often bullying is observed between these two species so we must watch for that

Boss went to Hessilhead yesterday this time with a baby Jackdaw . What a beautiful bird - lovely blue eyes and a white beak . He was very thin and dehydrated . She had to go again today with a tawny owl female that had been involved in a road traffic accident . Both legs were badly damaged and Boss expected rightly that she would have to be put down . Owls need their feet [ talons ] in good working order to survive so even if the legs could have been mended they were too badly damaged to have been able to catch rodents etc for her to feed . Andy at Hessilhead didn’t think she had a nest of eggs or babies as she didn’t have a big brood patch on her chest - indicative of nesting . Thank goodness . At this time of year any bird deaths could mean a whole family of birds are wiped out when the ‘ bread winner ‘ is killed .

Boss has managed to access Broadband on the Internet enabling her to spend more time on the computer online but not spending more money to pay for it !!! [ Not that we allow her lots of time to spend fiddling about on the computer - much more important things to do- like cuddling me ; feeding me ; brushing my long coat ;  taking my photo and I suppose looking after all the other animals ! ]

Boss having problems with the computer so is not able to do a lot at present . Hopefully it will be sorted soon  and more news will be posted on '' Moos Noos ''

Another trip to Hessilhead - this time with a tiny chaffinch baby . En route a phone call meant there was a detour to Milngavie to pick up another little chick . Both chicks were doing well when left . Whilst at Hessilhead Boss tried to feed a few Jackdaw youngsters - not as easy as Andy and Gaye make it look !! The ‘ sausage ‘ shape food would not look like a sausage for her ! The Jackdaws ate it anyway but quite a lot didn’t go down the beaks !

Today was also a ' catch up day ' as when Boss and Helen   go to do a fundraiser some of the not too important jobs get left to be done the day after .

The Hen house is not yet built - told you to watch this space ! That is FOUR days

The Shetland ponies Echo and Wispa came over from Briarlands for the Fintry Fling and along with Justin one of our donkeys gave rides to the children on the day .This along with a tombola raised much needed funds and helped to make the day very enjoyable - the weather was LOVELY . Bron and Peter spent the day at Gargunnock Show and raised more lovely pennies to feed me [ and the other animals ] over the winter .

Friday 6th June PDF  | Print |

Boss and Helen are rushing round organising things for the next few events ; Fintry Fling and Gargunnock show tomorrow and Kippen Street Fayre and Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games next Saturday . Apparently they need LOADS of things for the tombolas they hold - stationary ; toiletries ;unwanted gifts etc etc so if anyone has any they can drop off locally we would be VERY grateful. This is where most of our money comes from to feed ME and all the other animals I suppose .

Thursday 5th June PDF  | Print |

The degus are settling in well and now spend a lot of their time rushing around on their wheel - looks like a very large hamster wheel . Boss had to oil it with a little margarine it was squeaking so much . Still not sexed them. I reckon from the squeaks and groans as Boss tried it’s going to take two people to sex them [the degus have sharp YELLOW teeth - apparantly if they have white teeth they are ILL - and I think they were using them !!!] Still not sure what they look like most but I reckon squirrels are the leader so far.

Wednesday 4th June PDF  | Print |

The tiny chicks that we got on 20th March are ready to go into a ‘ grown up ‘ pen and to this end a poultry house and run have been bought . The house can be used at a later date as a free range house as the run is a free standing one . The house has come ‘ flat packed ‘ so THAT will cause great hilarity for me and my ‘ brovers ‘ as Boss tries to ‘ put it together !!! WATCH THIS SPACE

The two cockerals - Chick Pee and Cock a leekie - will go with Chicken Licken and Chickadee into the new house and go live in the pig field .Chickarro -the chick with the deformed beak -is coping well having soft food that she can scoop up . She is such a character flying out to be cuddled and rushing in to the feed trough as soon as food is put in shoving the others in her haste . She and Chick Weed will stay at Bronwens for the time being in the hen coop to allow Chickaroo to feed well - and have lots of cuddles ![which she loves !] .

The boy rabbits that went to the vet school to be castrated are all doing well though poor Tulip [ tiny grey Netherland dwarf ] was probably the one with most problems . He seemed very sore after the operation. He and Coltsfoot will go back to the volunteers to be looked after until such time as we have our new premises.

Saturday 31st May PDF  | Print |

Our first big show today - Drymen . The weather was wonderful - sunshine and blue skies all day . The crowds were out and we had a very success ful day - or they did I COULDN’T GO - don’t ask ! Why shouldn’t I go to these places too . The public would LOVE to stroke my lovely nose and scratch beneath my BIG horns . I am very gentle with them . I NEVER use them - on humans anyway . Mingerlay and Monachyle have to watch out sometimes if they tease me too much .

The four dogs were all working at different times and enjoyed lots of cuddles . Yodi is SO good she hardly moved when a little girl stood on her tail as she passed . Hazel - the dwarf lop rabbit and her two babies went too along with Puisicain the cat .

Four Degus have been handed in to our care . These are unusual animals from South America and we have spent the three days since they arrived trying to see how many ‘ animals ‘ we can see in them . They have chinchilla ears; squirrel faces and noses ; gerbil feet and claws ; their tails look a bit ratty but they have hair on at the end and they squeak like baby birds . They are very cute ! . They were quite stressed when they arrived and remained out of sight for much of the time but they are becoming much braver and come out to see what is going on . As yet we don’t know what sex they are and are hoping they are all the same as they have lived together for six months .We will have to check their sexes now they are a little less upset and separate if necessary .

Thursday 29th May PDF  | Print |

Boss been very busy this past week having gone to Hessilhead twice - once with a tiny starling and once with a family of five baby buns [ probably one to two days old ] . She was also on her own with the animals quite a lot of the time having mega problems with the electric fences ! ! ! We have four energisers and batteries and of the four three decided to play up this week ! The only one that is being good [ touch wood ] is the one at Tammys - and that isn’t on ! ! ! Two trips to get them sorted and another one tomorrow and then hopefully they will be good . At this time of the year when the grass is rich and long ; strip grazing is the only way to prevent animals getting too fat . Obviously this means occasional hungry tums if they have eaten all the ration for the day - they KNOW the grass on the other side is tasty .

Thursday 22 nd May PDF  | Print |

The boy buns are being operated on today and will hopefully come home tomorrow .

There was another trip to Hessilhead today - this time with a baby bun . Boss was asked to go pick up a damaged duck enroute , but when she got there the poor duck had already died . The baby bun arrived safely and will be monitored and re hydrated before anything is done .

The Chickens went outside into a large Ark coop this evening . This will give them more space and allow them to pick at grass , weeds etc . Chickaroo [ the little bantam with a crossed beak ], though small appears to be getting enough to eat and is definitely a sprightly wee thing . She always flies out when the lid is opened and sits on whoevers hand is there .

Tuesday 20th May PDF  | Print |

Ok here comes the Boss again with MORE wire for the fence and has put it right round the edge of the field [ does she think we haven’t seen the 4 metres that ISN’T fenced cos she ran out of wire !!! ] We will stay put ......FOR NOW .

The baby buns have their eyes open now and all SIX are adorable .we thought there were only five . I do hope we can find suitable homes for them all .

The remaining three boy buns are going to the Veterinary School to be castrated tomorrow . It will mean we should be able to never have one animal on its own as the boy buns will be able to mix with the females once the ‘’ aviary style ‘’ pens are provided again .

Well the electric fence seems to be working for the pigs so ........reckon WE need to break out - here goes.......*..I will follow Monachyle ... my horns are through .... !...* ... There .. . - gosh Jean has LOADS of lovely grass in her garden [munch munch ] Mingerlay is muttering in the paddock but WE are having a WONDERFUL feed . Oh .. Oh here comes the Boss . And she has a halter ! Oh well will have to follow Monachyle and go back into the paddock . He He here I go again .... and I am through before Boss has even got into the field !  Don’t think she is amused ! Now she has put that white tape round OUR field too . ! ! !

Briarlands Family Funday today ! The display looks good - Bron ,Peter and Peggy set it all up and Emma and Henrietta got the ponies ready to give rides later on in the day . Boss says Glendrick Roost wouldn’t survive if she didn’t have help from all the volunteers who give up their free time to help all the animals - she also sez Thank you to you all . The day went well . Lots and lots and lots of people came to see the wee furries and have cuddles in the cuddle corner . Children love animals and it is very important to get them to care for animals when they are young . Then they will be caring adults.

Pony rides were as usual very popular and Echo and Wispa worked hard giving rides up and down the grass . The children mostly had big smiles on their faces .

The ponies and donkeys are all settling into their summer homes and some of the wee furries went to Briarlands.to stay there for the summer . Tomorrow is the open day and more wee furries will go to be on show. A phone call this evening meant boss had to go to Hessilhead with a baby starling . The animals and birds taken to the wildlife hospital are given a chance to live .Any animal or bird that stays still to be caught has a problem and needs attention fast . Baby birds rarely survive if left to their own devices and are often dehydrated when rescued

Friday 16th May PDF  | Print |

When Boss and Emma went to do the Shetlands in Fintry today they found a fledgling Corvid ie Rook ,Crow , Raven ,Jay , Magpie or Jackdaw This one was a Crow though it was found by a Rookery. Boss goes to the wildlife Hospital at Beith - Hessilhead , on a regular basis especially during the spring and summer when there are so many baby birds needing help. Unfortunately this one didn’t make it and died .

The electic fence was switched on just before the ponies came in tonight . This was to allow Wee Dinky Doo to learn to respect it . It is a hard lesson to learn but an essential one . As we don’t want any accidents until she has learnt to respect it we need to be on hand to sort out any mishaps as she learns . She touched the fence and didn’t run backwards as most do she ran into it and through to the other side . So - boss had to sort it all out and try again . Next time Dinky Doo got tangled up in it . Fortunately Helen turned it off so she didn’t get too many shocks before we untangled her . NOT the most successful lesson but Dinky Doo did seem to be watching the horrible fence more closely . Hopefully she is going to be better tomorrow . Boss is going to put them out at lunchtime and hope all goes well .

A lot of activity at Briarlands today as everyone prepares for the Funday on Sunday .

Wednesday 14th May PDF  | Print |

Boss and Henrietta fitted up another electric fence to strip graze the paddock at Briarlands cos it is quite big and the ponies don’t want to get too fat . Being too heavy and eating too much rich grass can cause a painful condition of the feet called Laminitis . The ponies have so far been out for a few hours each day and then come in over night and stayed in during the morning eating hay to fill up their tums before going out onto the grass . This will hopefully prevent any problems .

Henrietta  had a ride on Patches and then both Shetlands - Echo and Wispa . The ponies were fine but when Patches was being ridden Pumpkin was a wee monkey . Patches bless her was very good no faults with her it was the Hooligan .! She decided to run alongside or infront and kick up her heels . What a monkey . Boss said she has a lot of lessons to learn this spring/' summer . Oooops ...... look out Pumpkin ! ! !

Tuesday 12th May PDF  | Print |

OUCH ... THAT FENCE STUNG US !!! see what Boss meant now ! it is what is called ‘’ LECTRICK ’’ . Don’t know what it means but do know it hurts us . How can she do that to us - we only want to help the pigs eat all their goodies ! !

Must say it has kept the pigs IN where they are supposed to be . Keep fingers crossed it continues to do so.

The weather has been lovely for quite a few days now . We spend a lot of our time sunbathing , chewing our cud and watching the world go by . .Ebony - Shetland mare and Jet her three year old son have also moved to their summer grazing . It is a lovely paddock down by the river Endrick but not big enough for more than two ponies . The rest of the wee ponies and donkeys have settled in at Briarlands farm and hope lots of people go see them over the summer months

Sunday 11th May PDF  | Print |

Tiggywinkle has once more come into season and once more has decided to go on the lookout for a boar. !! We saw her this morning starting to push her way out of the paddock and mooed and mooed to let Elaine know she was leaving .

Elaine lives in the house opposite. Don’t know if she heard us but on her way to work she saw her leaving and was able to ring the Boss who came and spent hours and hours fetching her back and securing the fence... YET AGAIN . Boss said something about it would keep US OUT TOO .Not sure what that meant ... she has put a thin white tape on that clicks - can’t see that stopping us pushing the pig fence down !!!
