Our organisation came into being because many animals came to me when no longer wanted or when they were suffering abuse. It was decided to form a “proper ” rescue centre to be able to help more animals than I could cope with on my own. We became an organisation in September 2003 and achieved charitable status in September 2005.

The Animals

The animals in our care at present range from gerbils to Cydesdale horses and anything in between .

We have six donkeys at present : Justin our oldest born in 1987 has been with us since he was a year old . In 2006 we rescued a skewbald jenny donkey- Patches . Six days after she came to us she gave us Pumpkin Pie another skewbald donkey whose dappled coat has only shown up this year 2011. Prior to this she only had white patches on her neck . In 2010 a poor chocolate 6-7month old jenny was rescued from Ireland in appalling conditions . We called her Dumpling. This wee donkey is in actual fact already taller than all the other donkeys ! Early in 2011 came Muffin a very timid little jack donkey who has since been gelded .  Our most recent addition is Chocolate Pudding who is already proving to be quite a character! This very dark donkey was also  rescued from Ireland and came to us when the family who rescued him at the same time as we rescued Dumpling lost their grazing and couldn’t keep him any more.

We only have one Clydesdale horse now – Sonny – as Eilidh – his mum , died at the beginning of May 2010 ; Meredin a beautiful Highland mare was born in 1999; Tonto a piebald gelding of unknown age is a lovely gentlman.  Gwerthfawr our beautiful Eriskay youngster  has grown into a lovely mare and was born in 2006; Wee Dinky Doo -a tricoloured miniature Shetland was born in 2007 . She   lives with Phoenix a skewbald mini Shetland born in 2005 and her son Mowgli born in 2009. Our standard Shetlands consist of   Echo a black Shetland pony and her son Wispa and lastly Ebony another black Shetland and her son Jet .

Other animals in our care consist of

Kune Kune Pigs,  a Highland cow and two Jersey bullocks , cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, degus, chinchillas ,  terrapins , tortoises,  cockatiels, budgies , parakeets an amazon parrot, an African Grey and a maximillian parrot. Our ex-battery hens are regularly producing eggs.

All the animals at The Roost are given A Home for Life and we have a No Kill policy except on Veterinary advice .

The People

My name is Mione Morrison . I am founder and Centre Manager of Glendrick Roost . I have always loved animals and have had large collections from being a child . My mum encouraged me in this and allowed any animals as long as I was prepared to look after them . No going to bed without them being fed !

I have an honours degree in environmental sciences with biology and have been able to put a large amount of my newfound knowledge to good use in the care of the animals at the centre . When our new premises are found I shall also be able to put environmental policies into practise and help preserve and enhance the environment around the centre . One of my hobbies is birdwatching and I will provide new habitats to encourage wildlife to use the facilities available .

I am also very interested in teaching youngsters to care for all animals and strongly believe that by doing this they will not only care for animals but will become more caring adults. By giving disabled people a chance to handle and be near animals their lives will be enriched and often in the case of a mental health issue a communication channel can be opened.

Gavin Marshall

Hi, I’m Gav and I have been involved with Glendrick Roost for over 10years. Since becoming involved with the Roost I have learned a lot, gained a lot of self confidence and gained a lot of hands on experience with animals, people and the environment. I went to Oatridge College and did a course in Agriculture in which I gained experience and confidence in working with animals some of which I was able to bring back and put into practice at the Roost
